Spee-Dee® Packaging Machinery Creates Breakthrough With New Dual Auger System

Sturtevant, Wis. — James P. Navin, President of Spee-Dee® Packaging Machinery, Inc., recently introduced the company’s latest innovation, the 3500 Series Dual Digitronic® Auger Filler System. Navin stated, “The system is the first in the industry designed to efficiently meet the challenge of filling two dry products with different characteristics through a single tube and into one pouch or package.”

Timm Johnson, Spee-Dee Vice President, Sales/Marketing, explained the chief benefits packagers realize from the dual auger combination. “The unique engineering of the Dual Digitronic Auger System is simple, yet elegant. One of the augers is mounted at an angle to allow both to be installed in the same vertical form/fill/seal (VFFS) equipment. The VFFS equipment takes significantly less production floor space than the horizontal form/fill/seal (HFFS) units that would otherwise be necessary. With this installation, there is often a dramatic increase in fill rate and productivity since this dual auger arrangement eliminates moving the pouch to the next machine for the next fill.”

“Filling two products through the same tube,” Johnson continued, “produces uniform blending of the ingredients, enhancing product quality and consistency. Previous methods often resulted in layering when the second ingredient was filled on top of the first by another machine. This produced unsightly clumps in the package, and complaints from consumers who found the lumps visually unappetizing, and difficult to separate. Now, the food is easier to prepare, and more pleasing to the eye.”

Typical products for this new configuration may include a particulate and a powdered ingredient, such as rice and spice mixes, noodle dishes, soup entrees, potato mixtures, and other consumer food items with special seasonings.

The integration of the 3500 Series Dual Digitronic®Auger Filler System is complete. It boasts a single controller to manage both augers, a unified full color touch screen for all operations, and one electrical cabinet. A 50 product memory module is standard, and is programmed to store recipes by alphanumeric name, rather than difficult to remember product codes. In addition, the dual auger combination can be expanded to accommodate a third auger for VFFS applications.

Spee-Dee’s advanced servo technology offers increased accuracy to reduce expensive product giveaway, consistent repeatability, and heightened efficiency with the 3500 Series Dual Digitronic® Auger Filler System, and with the company’s entire servo auger line of equipment. All electronic components are commercially available worldwide to facilitate easy maintenance.
